A Blogging Award

by Gretchen Demoss
One of our new readers over at http://www.savedbydogs.com passed the Versatile Blogger Award on to us this week. It’s always fun to hear who is reading our blog, and it’s even more fun to receive a blogging award.

Versatile Blogger Award

As part of this blogging award, we’re supposed to tell seven things you might not know about us and then pass the award on to other bloggers. Here are some things you may not know about Kendall and me.

1. Kendall’s favorite food in the whole wide world is sweet potatoes! She’ll eat anything and everything sweet potato.

2. Kendall doesn’t like bananas. She eats lots of other fruit like strawberries, cherries without their pits, kiwi, etc., but she doesn’t like bananas at all.

3. I once bungee jumped from a logging bridge in Washington state – all in the name of science. I jumped twice, once forward and once backward,  but would never do it again.

4.  I don’t like to garden. We’re lucky to have transformed our yard into a perennial oasis. I don’t have to do anything but watch stuff grow and flower.

5.  I have my motorcycle endorsement. I don’t plan to ever ride a motorcycle, but getting the endorsement was on my bucket list.

6.  I love the beach. I find it relaxing and calming. There’s nothing like walking on the beach and finding sand dollars. Kendall loves it, too.

7.  We don’t go out for Valentine’s Day. We plan a picnic in front of the fire. One of us is in charge of picking up dinner and the other is in charge of dessert. It saves a lot of money and is just as romantic, if not more.

Here are the blogs we’re passing the Versatile Blogging Award on to:

Gardening with Wyatt - Wyatt’s a fun-loving Airedale whose people are the ones responsible for our awesome yard. He’s always up to something.

Life with Desmond - Desmond has had some rough times dealing with the stress of Superstorm Sandy. It looks like they’ve already received this award, but I’m sending it their way again.

You Did What with your Weiner - Follow Gretel and Chester, two Dachshunds as they hike around Seattle and explore the Pacific Northwest.

Urban Hounds - You’ll find product reviews, book reviews, recipes, and more over at Urban Hounds.

Little Vintage Trailer - This isn’t a dog blog, but it is one I enjoy reading. I love the design of the blog, and there’s plenty to read about vintage trailers there.

We are a Featured Blogger!

A big welcome to all of you who have found your way to our blog through Spot Magazine. I hope you find lots of interesting stories of our adventures throughout the blog.

Each month Spot Magazine chooses a blog to feature in their magazine. This month they chose us! The story follows an article on events happening in Lincoln City later this month, so they focused on our pictures and stories about trips to the beach. There isn’t a link to the story on their web site yet, but you can read the article in May’s Spot Magazine, available for free at over 800 pet stores/facilities throughout Oregon and Washington.

I like to check their web site and/or the print magazine to see all of the pet events scheduled for the month. They also have wonderful articles on living with your pet, pet photography, and other pet topics.

2012 Pet Blogger Challenge

Pet Blogger Challenge
We’re joining in on the Pet Blogger Challenge that is hosted by Will My Dog Hate Me and GoPetFriendly

1. When did you begin your blog?

I started my blog on September 21, 2008. Kendall was just big enough to fit in the palms of our hands.

2. What was your original purpose for starting a blog?

The original purpose was to provide a way for my mom, who lived 3,000 miles away, to easily view the pictures and follow the adventures of Kendall, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as she grew up.

3. Is your current purpose the same? If not, what’s different?

Unfortunately, my mom passed away in December 2010. During the 2+ years that she did read my blog I grew my readership, and I have people from around the world who read my blog. I  no longer write for mom but rather to connect with the people who do read my blog. It also gives me an outlet for my creative side. I spend my days in a world of science and technology, and it’s nice to have an outlet.

4. Do you blog on a schedule or as the spirit moves you?

I try to blog at least a few times a week. I tried, and succeeded, at NaBloPoMo last June, but I found that it wasn’t nearly as much fun when it became something I had to do. I’d rather blog when there’s something I’d like to share.

5. Are you generating income from your blog?

I generate just a little bit from BlogHer Publishing Network. It’s not nearly enough to cover my domain hosting, but it helps. I’m not in this for the money. I find it’s a fairly inexpensive hobby.

6. What do you like most about blogging in general and your blog in particular (bragging is good!)?

The thing that I like most about blogging is that it gets me out of the house in search of adventures to blog about. Just last weekend I went saké tasting because I needed blog material.

I’ve met some wonderful people through the blog. It also gives you an excuse to walk up and talk to people. I’ve taken pictures of dogs throughout the Florida Keys and heard the fun stories from their owners, just because I could. I’ve taken pictures of Flat Kendall on a cattle drive in Dallas, TX and hanging out with Mickey and Pluto in Orlando.

It also gives me a chance to talk about the volunteer work that Kendall and I do with the Delta Society. We’re a registered Pet Partner team. We make bi-weekly visits to an assisted living center in the area, and we participate in the Read to the Dogs program at the local library. It’s a great way to get the word out about the wonderful opportunities the Delta Society has provided.

I had business cards with the blog information made up for the BlogHer conference last year that I hand out. It’s always a conversation starter.

7. What do you like least?

Because I view this as a hobby and not a business, there’s not much that I don’t like. The occasional lost code or altered themes due to an update are an inconvenience but nothing I can’t handle.

8. How do you see your blog changing/growing in 2012?

I’d really like to expand the information included in the sidebar and develop my own blog badge. I’m going to BlogPaws 2012, so I’m looking forward to meeting more pet bloggers and learning a thing or two.

Check out the other pet bloggers who are participating over here.

BlogHer ’11 – Fun, Fun, and More Fun

Have you ever had one of those busy stretches of time where it seems like you’re home only to sleep and then you’re on the run again the next day? That’s how my entire summer has been. After coming home from the BlogHer ’11 conference, I kept meaning to write my post-conference blog post, but it never happened – until now! One of the reasons I put it off so long, besides the lack of time, is that I couldn’t seem to find any particular words that could easily sum up the intensity, excitement, and overall awesomeness of the BlogHer conference.

I was a bit apprehensive about going to BlogHer without knowing anyone. It seemed like all of the tweets and blog posts I read were about people meeting up with old friends. I even wrote a post about how it seemed like it might be a little like high school. I wasn’t a mommy blogger, so how could I possibly fit in? I couldn’t have been more off base with my thinking! I had an awesome time.

My flight into San Diego was delayed, so I arrived at the hotel with minutes to spare before the opening of the exhibit hall.  I ran up to my room to drop my bags, and this is what I saw. How awesome is that?

The view from the Marriot Marquis and Marina hotel

After making my way through the exhibit hall and picking up some pretty great swag, I went to the People’s Party sponsored by BlogHer. A great big thank you to Colette of Learning to Eat Allergy Free for setting the tone for the entire conference. While getting some food, she invited me to sit with her. Others joined our table, and it was a great night of food, wine, and great conversation. I found this to be a recurring theme throughout the conference. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Not once did I feel like I was the nerd back in high school.

At the Newbies breakfast, I saw a table with a number of flat pets on it. I stopped to say Hi and found that everyone at the table was a pet blogger or somehow affiliated with a pet company. I had found my peeps!

Flat pets at the BlogHer conference

They invited me to sit with them at the Birds of a Feather luncheon where like-minded bloggers could gather. Then, they invited me to the coffee and cupcakes event I featured in my Wordless Wednesday post. I had SO MUCH FUN! It was great meeting and talking with many of the bloggers whose blogs I regularly read.

Flat Pets at the Coffe and Cupcakes event

It was a busy few days at the conference, but I did find time to attend a few sessions. The first session was a panel that consisted of  Brené Brown, Mr Lady, and Shauna James Ahern and was moderated by Gretchen Rubin. I’ve been a big fan of Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project for awhile now. I have her book, read her blog, and get her daily emails of happiness quotes. I got a chance to meet her! Anyone named Gretchen can’t be half bad, can she? I’ve also been a follower of Shauna’s blog, Gluten Free Girl and the Chef, for about four years now. She’s always been an inspiration when it comes to eating gluten free. She’s a beautiful writer and has some great recipes on her site. Definitely worth a follow.

Gretchen, Brene, Shauna, and Mr. Lady

The next session I attended was Food Photography That Will feed Your Soul with Penny De Los Santos. I discovered her blog earlier this year when looking for information on eating savory oats. Her photos of a beautiful bowl of oats topped with aged cheddar, olive oil, and salt and pepper, lured me in to her site. I was hooked from the beginning and had to look at all of her photos. When I saw that I’d have a chance to attend her session, I made sure I showed up early to get a great seat. She is an amazing person. I loved hearing her describe the waiting and the lighting and the composition of each of her photos.

Those two sessions, alone, made it worthwhile to travel to the BlogHer conference. I attended others, picked up some great tips for the blog, and met some really fun people. I also attended a private screening of the movie, The Help, and did so much more. How do I fit it all into one blog post? Obviously I can’t, so I’ll have to find time to blog about the other great things I did at BlogHer 11.

Blog Guest – Heimey the cat

I’m Oppenheimer, better known as Heimey, and I’m the other cat that lives in the house with Kendall and Rico, last week’s guest blogger. Let’s get one thing straight. I don’t like dogs. Never have, never will. I let Kendall know who’s boss. Even though I don’t have any claws, I can let her know how much I dislike her through my evil looks and hissy fits.

I came to live with these people when I was only 8 weeks old. I’ve only been out of the house a few times. The last time I went out they brought me to this great new house. It’s a lot bigger than the other place where I used to live. My world is pretty small, but there’s lots for me to do. I even have my own camping tent that mom got from Ikea. It looks just like this, and I spend most of my day in here.

I’m about 12 years old, which gives me the right to be a grumpy, old man. I like the people I live with but hiss at anyone else who comes in the house. They didn’t socialize me very well when I was a kitten.

I like Rico most of the time. Not always, but most of the time. Sometimes we try to hide from Kendall. She always finds us, though.

I have wings on my back and a mask on my face. Guess that makes me kind of like a superhero.

Who couldn’t help but love a face like this?

Would you like to be our guest blogger next Thursday? If so, email me (Gretchen, not Heimey) a couple of pictures of you and a description of who you are and what you like to do. You can email me at gretchen@kendalldog.com.

Finally Friday

Not only is it finally Friday, it’s also Follow Friday over at Never Growing Old. I spend a lot of time reading dog and pet blogs, but I also enjoy branching out and reading other blogs. This Friday Follow list gives me some great new blogs to read.

I spent the week traveling for work to Washington DC for the Association of Educational Publishers conference. I learned a lot, made some great new contacts, and met with some people who shared some valuable information. I also had a chance to do a little shopping. It was in the high 90′s each day I was there, so I didn’t spend much time outside. One of these days I’m going to have to go to DC as a tourist and take in the museums. I have the attention span of a gnat, so I’ll have to do it in small doses.

I’m looking forward to the weekend and having time to ride the Vespa and go to the farmers market. I almost forgot – we’re going to see Lyle Lovett on Saturday night. What do you have planned this weekend?

New cards and a Saturday Pet Blog Hop

It’s Saturday, so that means it must be Pet Blog Hop day over at Two Little Cavaliers.

If you’re stopping by from the Blog Hop, welcome. We’re glad you stopped by.

I’m headed off to BlogHer in August to learn more about blogging. I had some cards printed up to take with me, and they arrived yesterday.

This is a scan of it. The colors on the card are much more vibrant. I’m pleased with them. What do you think? The back has the same picture of her but it fills the entire card and is muted.

Meeting Spencer’s Mom

One of the highlights of a recent business trip to Washington DC was a visit with Whitney of The Preppy Pink and Green Puppy blog. We have left lots of comments on each others blogs but had never met in person – until last week. We had a great time out for drinks at McCormick and Schmicks.
