Speeders

They say the best camera you can have is the one you have with you. While antiquing on the Oregon coast over the weekend we ran into something we’ve never seen before – Railroad Motorcars, or speeders as they’re sometimes called. The only camera I had with me was the one on my phone, so here are some so-so pictures of some really cute rail cars.

These cute railcars are owned by individuals who get together for excursions on the rails. These were originally used to inspect the rails for defects. They replaced the hand pumped maintenance cars from years ago. Recently, they’ve been replaced by Hy-Rail vehicles, the pickup trucks you see running on the rails.

Even though they only reach a top speed of 30 mph, they were called speeders because they traveled so much faster than the hand pump cars that preceded them.

They're the perfect size for a Cavalier.

Motorcar owners belong to clubs that obtain permission to use the rails for excursions that range from one day to over a week across the US and Canada. You can see a full list of excursions on the NARCOA web site.

This was a nice surprise encounter on an otherwise rainy day on the Oregon coast.

Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day to all of our US blog readers. It’s the unofficial kickoff to summer in many places across the country. Unfortunately, here in the Pacific NW it’s just another rainy weekend. We don’t get our summer weather until sometime in early July.

Today, Memorial Day, is the day we honor those who died while serving our country. It originally honored those who died during the Civil War. Later it was expanded to include all Americans who have died while in the military service.

Flat Kendall visits Palmer, Alaska

by Gretchen DeMoss

That Flat Kendall is sure getting around these days. This week she tagged along with a friend of mine who is visiting Palmer, Alaska. It looks a lot colder there than Flat Kendall’s trip to Oahu, HI last week.

It's snowing this week in Palmer

You will never, ever guess where Flat Kendall is off to next month. Just wait and see.

Goodbye, Bailey

Most of the time Facebook brings you good news: birth announcements, engagements, good food, good times. Sometimes, however, Facebook is the bearer of sad news. It seems like too often lately, I’ve learned of sad news during my morning visits  to Facebook. Today I learned that Kendall’s older brother, Bailey, died yesterday from complications during surgery.

Bailey was an awesome dog. He will surely be missed. He and Kendall were like two peas in a pod. Our hearts go out to his owners who are friends of ours.

So, give your pup an extra hug today and cherish every day you have with them.

Flat Kendall tags along on a trip to Oahu, HI

by Gretchen DeMoss

I recently traveled to Oahu, HI on business and Flat Kendall tagged along. She had a good time checking out the beaches. Kendall’s not a big fan of hot weather, but she was a good sport about it all. Even though I was working in Honolulu, I chose to stay over in Kailua. It’s a lot quieter and less busy over there. It’s also where President Obama chooses to stay on vacation.

There was a big accident on H1, the highway I had to take to get to Kailua, so we took the long way around the edge of the island. I pulled off everywhere I could to take pictures.

Those are snorkelers you see over near the rocks. Upon closer inspection of the water, I saw two sea turtles!

As you can see, it was a bit rainy and cloudy while we were there. There was no lack of hot, though. I forgot that most houses don’t have air conditioning, so it took some getting used to in order to be able to sleep.

On my last day there, I found this calendar in the ABC store. Looks like Flat Kendall isn’t the only Cavalier enjoying Hawaii.

A Blogging Award

by Gretchen Demoss
One of our new readers over at http://www.savedbydogs.com passed the Versatile Blogger Award on to us this week. It’s always fun to hear who is reading our blog, and it’s even more fun to receive a blogging award.

Versatile Blogger Award

As part of this blogging award, we’re supposed to tell seven things you might not know about us and then pass the award on to other bloggers. Here are some things you may not know about Kendall and me.

1. Kendall’s favorite food in the whole wide world is sweet potatoes! She’ll eat anything and everything sweet potato.

2. Kendall doesn’t like bananas. She eats lots of other fruit like strawberries, cherries without their pits, kiwi, etc., but she doesn’t like bananas at all.

3. I once bungee jumped from a logging bridge in Washington state – all in the name of science. I jumped twice, once forward and once backward,  but would never do it again.

4.  I don’t like to garden. We’re lucky to have transformed our yard into a perennial oasis. I don’t have to do anything but watch stuff grow and flower.

5.  I have my motorcycle endorsement. I don’t plan to ever ride a motorcycle, but getting the endorsement was on my bucket list.

6.  I love the beach. I find it relaxing and calming. There’s nothing like walking on the beach and finding sand dollars. Kendall loves it, too.

7.  We don’t go out for Valentine’s Day. We plan a picnic in front of the fire. One of us is in charge of picking up dinner and the other is in charge of dessert. It saves a lot of money and is just as romantic, if not more.

Here are the blogs we’re passing the Versatile Blogging Award on to:

Gardening with Wyatt – Wyatt’s a fun-loving Airedale whose people are the ones responsible for our awesome yard. He’s always up to something.

Life with Desmond – Desmond has had some rough times dealing with the stress of Superstorm Sandy. It looks like they’ve already received this award, but I’m sending it their way again.

You Did What with your Weiner – Follow Gretel and Chester, two Dachshunds as they hike around Seattle and explore the Pacific Northwest.

Urban Hounds – You’ll find product reviews, book reviews, recipes, and more over at Urban Hounds.

Little Vintage Trailer – This isn’t a dog blog, but it is one I enjoy reading. I love the design of the blog, and there’s plenty to read about vintage trailers there.

Flat Kendall spends more time in the Florida Keys

Flat Kendall spent a total of 10 days hanging out, seeing stuff, and relaxing in the Florida Keys. Here are some other highlights from her trip.

We stopped at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center to see who was there. Last time we stopped we were able to feed the pelicans. Unfortunately, flooding from last year’s storms have made it so you can’t walk all the way to the beach for feeding along their boardwalk. We did see a few pelicans there, though.

On of our favorite places to visit on our trips to the Keys is Snappers. We went for happy hour and got lots of colorful pictures.

While Flat Kendall was busy lounging on the beaches of Maui, we packed her up and took her on vacation with us to the Florida Keys. We always make sure we stop at the World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada to check out the latest in sunglasses and beach wear. There’s a restaurant there, as well as a place to wet your whistle.

From there we headed south to the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon. We once rode our bikes over this bridge when we did Bubba Fest, a bike tour from Key Largo to Key West and back.

There’s a new (since we were last there) restaurant/tiki bar/pool bar at the north (east) end of the bridge. We stopped to have a drink and do some people watching.

At a stop at the Lorelei in Islamorada we found some pretty weird boats – a pink Cadillac boat and a pirate ship. Both were available for hire.

A vacation to the Florida Keys wouldn’t be complete without lots and lots of relaxation. This is the view from the sun deck by the pool at the condo where we like to stay.

Ah! A place to relax.

Ahhh! A place to relax.

Flat Kendall went on lots of adventures while visiting the Keys. Be sure to stop back over the next few days to see what else she was up to.
